Motor coach safety is a serious concern for anyone who relies on and uses this growing and affordable mode of transportation.

More needs to be done to protect passengers who ride on motor coaches. I urge you to support improving the safety of motor coaches by co-sponsoring legislation, S. 2326, the Motor coach Enhanced Safety Act of 2007, introduced by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX).

Last year, there were more than 630 million passengers taking trips in motor coaches, almost as many passenger trips as U.S. commercial airlines carried that year.

Motor coaches are the passenger airliners of America’s highways, carrying up to 59 passengers for a given trip. When a crash occurs it can be catastrophic and deadly.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has investigated and reported on major motor coach crashes involving scores of deaths and hundreds of injuries. The NTSB investigations have resulted in numerous recommendations to the U.S. Department of Transportation to take action to improve the safety of the motor coach, the driver and the motor coach company. Unfortunately, these recommendations have languished or been ignored for many years.

Deaths and injuries due to motor coach crashes can be prevented. Enactment of this legislation will result in better protection of passengers by requiring seat belts, rollover and ejection prevention technologies, testing and improvement of motor coach interiors to reduce flammability and toxicity in case of a fire, more frequent safety inspections of motor coach operators, and better motor coach driver training and licensing.

Legislation is needed to correct dangerous and deadly motor coach safety problems. Congress needs to act now and pass S.2326.
